[edit] SMTP Server Problem
Transmission of a message ahead domain will do an error reply from SMTP Server in the case of IDN ( perfection correspondence).
Ex: 5.1.3 Syntax error in mailbox address "mailtest@?.?" (non-printable charactor)

[edit] Opera and SpamStopsHere pass the test
Opera's MUA did a great job. The UI even handled the reverse format of Hebrew for keyboard input and screen display. SpamStopsHere did not choke on the address; but, one may have to change the default settings to allow mail from certain countries -- e.g. netblock and CC filters. Wphelps 20:08, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Postfix rejects unencoded RHS
I tried the Mulberry MUA sending to the Postfix MTA for the Devangari UTF-8 format addresses.
The Mulberry UA seemed to just pass on the bytes (no punycoding); the Postfix MTA rejected the mail (correctly IMHO) as "Illegal address syntax". --Alvestrand 21:01, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Refused to send
I tried using both types, ie, both from the left column and from the right column in both Hotmail and Googlemail and they both refused to send both types. This is from a Mac using OSX 10.3.9 and Safari browser 1.3.2 (v312.6).
Googlemail refused to send both types and said - "Please make sure that email addresses contain no spaces and exactly one "@" sign."
Hotmail refused to send both types and said - "The recipient's address can only contain English characters (a-z or A-Z), numbers (0-9), and specific symbols (such as @). Please try again."
I have another email called Horde which I think is a web based email and that refused to send both types too, saying "Invalid character in e-mail address: mailtest@例え.テスト"
I'm not a techie so I don't know if they're capable of being adjusted in order to make them work, sorry.
I don't have any other type of email to test it on.

- Hello again,
I just tried your suggestion of putting a link in the subject bar and the text body of both Hotmail and Googlemail and it was all good.
The writing kept it's integrity in the received mail of both the subject bars and text bodies of both Googlemail and Hotmail and when I picked up the received mails both the links in both the text bodies clicked through perfectly.
By the way, do you have any idea yet when this is going to be activated for general use cos I sure would like to use it.

[edit] How about adding some MX records in the DNS for the test email domains?
Hey ICANN guys
Could you add some MX records in the DNS for the test emails? Seems only reason the email test works at all is due to fallback use of the A record if a MX record is not in DNS. Some email server implementations may not be doing the fallback.
Using Greek test email address domain as example:
Query MX (mail exchanger record) > Questions: xn--hxajbheg2az3al.xn--jxalpdlp type: MX (mail exchange) class: IN (Internet) > Authoritative name servers: xn--jxalpdlp 1200 SOA dns1.icann.org email: postmaster.icann.org serial: 2007100900 refresh: 43200 retry: 3600 expire 1209600 minimum 172800
No answer to MX question just the SOA record.

[edit] Outlook / Windows Mail Client, AltN World Client
mailtest@παράδειγμα.δοκιμή on Windows Mail (Outlook Express replacement) on 64bit Vista, POP server is AltN MDaemon v6.8.5: Displays mailtest@παράδειγμα.δοκιμή, won't send, tries to resolve name to address book entry, can not add address book entry with non ASCII email address.
mailtest@xn--hxajbheg2az3al.xn--jxalpdlp on same client as above works.
AltN World Client (web based client) v6.8.5 on same mail server as above sending to mailtest@παράδειγμα.δοκιμή: displays mailtest@παράδειγμα.δοκιμή, in sent mail folder as mailtest@(Decimal NCRs) I'm not going to hold my breath on a reply to that.

All tests I did work, got my replies, had the unicode charakters (greek, ....) on the to: line in my mailclient. Wonder how the DNS configuration looks for this IDN's. Punycoding on To: line took few seconds to be translated in nice characters.

The technical committee for the "Arabic Domain Name Pilot Project" (www.arabic-domains.org) has published a comprehensive report for evaluating the Arabic "example.test" (مثال.إختبار) domain name against many applications and in different operating systems.

Postfix accepted the mail and routed it to ICANN.

Probably Thunderbird translates localized string to 7bit. All national symbols lost.

I tried sending email with below email address from yahoo webmail and got 2 replies.

"... Two copies of this acknowledgment are being sent to you in reply. One is being sent from the address to which you sent your own message. Receiving it means that all intervening mail agents were able to process the IDN component of the address properly.
